Enterprise User Security addresses user, administrative, and security challenges by relying on the identity management services supplied by Oracle Internet Directory, an LDAP-compliant directory service. Identity management is the process by which the complete security life cycle for network entities is managed in an organization. It typically refers to the management of an organizations' application users, where steps in the security life cycle include account creation, suspension, privilege modification, and account deletion.

Figure: Enterprise User Security and the Oracle Security Architecture shows how Enterprise User Security fits into the Oracle security architecture, which uses the Oracle Identity Management infrastructure as its foundation. For example, a user can be provisioned in Oracle Internet Directory to access database applications and Web services. Enterprise User Security provides the bindings that users need to access the database.
