Today we will talk about the game franchise: Dying Light, created by the developers from Techland developers. We will find out how things are about the development of Dying Light 2 now and think a little about the first part. This blog is designed for people who are already familiar with the above games, but I will also try to describe the most clear as possible for the unprecedented ones so that you catch the essence of my words. (The blog will be small in volume, read in 5 minutes)
To begin with, about: Dying Light (2015)
Initially, the Polish company Techland developed many a well -known project from the Dead Island series under the name: “Dead Island 2”, but after some time the development was frozen and the developers began to create: “Dying Light”.
What is it: “Dying Light”?
– Dying Light is a game in which genres such as Survival Horror and Action -adventure are mixed. The narrative is from the first person. The game has an open world. The main advantage of the game is the advanced Parkuru system, where the player can move through almost any obstacles. Also in the game there are dynamic weather conditions and the type of enemies for the player depends on the time of day. The most ferocious and bloodthirsty types of zombies go to “lunch” only at night. A lot of (100+) types of various cold and firearms are available in the arsenal of the player. Also, cold weapons have its own strength and can be repaired several times, and any cold weapons can be modified, thereby improving their characteristics, hanging them for example the effect of fire or electricity. The main character also has three branches of skills that can be pumped: strength, dexterity and survival.
A few words about the plot:
– The whole plot is built around the Middle Eastern City of Harran, where there was a flash of a zombie virus. The main character, Kyle Crane, is an agent under the guise arriving in the city in search of the leader of the local bandits, from whom must take secret files with vaccine achievements. Kyle arrives in the city being dropped from the plane on a parachute, but it is unsuccessful and one of the zombies bites and bites it. However, a group of local survivors who live in the “tower” (the largest shelter in the city) pull the hero from tenacious paws of the dead.
And the game has additions?
– There is, and we will talk about them. Over 5 years of supporting the game, the developers managed to provide players with really a lot of new content. Conditionally, all of it can be divided into several groups:
-Additions with new locations (smaller than plot)
Let’s talk more about everyone:
-Let’s start with skins and weapons: of course, the developers do not deprive with diversity, there are both paid and free skins for various weapons for the player. Also arranged collaborations with different games, such as for example: “Unturned” and “Left4dead”, where thematic weapons were added. You can see examples of such skins and collab a little below.
-Festive events: there are also enough festive events in the game, almost every month this or that event takes place, dedicated to any holiday, whether it is: Easter, anniversary of the game, Christmas, etc. Each such event is good in its own way, but sometimes they can repeat it over and over again, which is of course annoying over time, but I think that the person who has not played will like it. A couple of examples of such events in the photo below.
-Additions with new locations: there are three of them: “The Bozak Horde”, “Prison Heist” and “Hellraid”. Here, in the middle of the barrel of honey, a spoon of tar, which I will talk about now, but so far about the good.

-“Prison Heist” (“Escape from Prison” – in Russian) is an addition, where the player is given the opportunity to rob the weapon storage in prison, but in order to get to it, there are many difficulties in the form of zombies and bandits. It is also interesting to go through it only the first several times, but in principle, the developers managed to create a good DLC. Provided to players for free.
-“Hellraid” (“Hell raid” – in Russian) This is an addition, where you can feel like in the Middle Ages and fight against skeletons, zombies in armor and other inherent in the Middle Ages. The addition itself was inspired by the previously canceled fantasy project by the company of the same name. But this is DLC and the same spoon of the tar that I spoke about earlier. For 350 rubles you are given a not particularly interesting location and a couple of bosses. There is absolutely no desire to recall several times and it is not worth your money.Examples of all DLC can be seen in the photo below.
This is perhaps the most important and large -scale DLC that the developers issued, it is called: “Dying Light: The Following”. The addition adds a new plot to the game, which develops the events of the game after the ending, also added a new large location and transport with the possibility of pumping. Two new branches of pumping the hero himself were also added: driving level and legend level. In my opinion, the plot in this DLC even exceeds the plot of the game itself, and in general, the addition has added a lot of new content. He was very warmly accepted by the community of fans, and just fans of crumbling zombie. Why am I leading all this?
In fact, I wrote all the higher only so that you understand how long the developers have been trying to maintain the project, for 5 years have been making new content for the 2015 project. And even though it is not always possible to make an excellent DLC that the developers are really busy with their favorite business and they are not anyway to the community of devoted players. This is generally a rarity in our time, when the developers release additions for a long time. (Now I’m not talking about online projects where additions are needed to pump money from players, for example, combat passes) I believe that the future Poles project will turn out excellent, I see that the developers have ambitions, they are “burning eyes”, and this is the most important thing. And by the way, let’s go to the project in more detail.
Is everything all right? Dying Light 2 (the release date is unknown)
Everything is very ambiguous here. On the one hand, I believe that you will get an excellent project that will erect all the mechanics of the last part to the Absolute;On the other hand, there are several reasons, thanks to which the game can turn out to be mediocre, which will become a collapse for the studio as a whole.
About the reasons further:
-The first “nail in the cover of the problems” was the dismissal of the leading scriptwriter of the game: Chris Avelon (maybe you already heard his name, he was involved in the development: “Fallout 2”, “Fallout: New Vegas” and a bunch of other projects). In general, Chris lost his work in Techland thanks to a sexual scandal around him. According to the girl under the name of Carissa, he gave her alcohol and harassed her at the hotel. Despite the lack of evidence, Avelon apologized to the girl, but his career was already “set up”. So Dying Light 2 lost the main screenwriter.
-The second “nail” for the project was a scandalous investigation of journalists from: “Polskigamedev” (here is a link to the article) about the situation in the development studio. According to journalists in Techland, a complete mess is happening, there is no organization and cooperative. It is also said about the large “shit of personnel”, but the most important thing is the discrepancy between the views of Chris Abelon (former leading screenwriter) and Adrian Chishevski (creative director). However, now Chris Avelon has left the studio, so maybe the situation has already stabilized. It is also said about the absence of a vertical cut of the game. The article from Polskigamedev describes many more problems, but they are not so large -scale, so we will not affect them.
Techland herself a few days after the publication of the article refuted almost all the words said earlier and announced an incorrect translation from Polish into English because of which readers were misleading. According to the developers: there are no frames, the vertical cut of the game is ready for 4 years, there are no chaos and a booth in the studio, they did not have conflicts with Chris Avelon. In general, I would like everything to really be as the developers say, but pulling the date of the release of the game gradually intensifying faith in the words of journalists. Speaking of the release date.
-Dying Light 2 release date has already been postponed and now the project will be unknown when it is unknown when. Initially, the game was supposed to get to the shelves in the spring of 2020, but was postponed for an indefinite period. Most likely, the project will not be released in 2020, since the summer is already coming to an end and the autumn-winter period is simply full of competing games, the same for example, “Cyberpunk 2077” (November 19). I bet in the spring of 2021, then the project will be relatively ready.
Let’s go from the bad smoothly to the good, tell you about the known details of Dying Light 2:
-The game takes place after 15 years, after the events of the last part of the game.
-The open world is now 4 times more than in the first part of Dying Light “.
-The main character is now acts “Aiden Codvell”, arriving at The City to search for a vaccine from the virus, as it is rusted. “The City” is as the developers say: the last stronghold of civilization (probably the last city with survivors).
-Now in the game there is a division into fractions and the city itself is divided into 7 districts (probably each district controls its own faction).
-The most important mechanics of this game are the consequences. You can make various decisions by completing tasks, which will then affect further events. In the GamePlay video below there is an example of such a relationship between solutions and consequences.
-The developers decided to abandon firearms. (The rollers shows that there is an air gun, but no more).
-The mechanics of the hook-cat from the previous part have changed a lot, now it works according to physically correct laws. (In the first part, the hook-cat was an imbalanic and absolutely not realistic thing).
-According to the developers, having gone through the game once you can see about 50% of the content to see the whole, you will need to change your decisions in the course of the game in various situations.
-The balance between zombies and people has changed a lot. The dead now lives only in dark places, or goes hunting at night.
-The story of what happened and Kyle Crane (the main character of the first part) will still be told.
-The number of parkour movements doubled.
-Now that the hero goes outside at night, he has a “scale of infection”, and if the player does not look for the sources of the UV light, the hero may eventually turn into zombies and the game will end.
-The game works on the new engine: “C-option”.
