Eastside Legal Assistance Program (ELAP) is a non-profit organization, located in Bellevue, WA that provides low-cost legal assistance to low income individuals and families in East King County Washington. I’ve been a member of the Board of Directors for two years. I’ve also enjoyed volunteering my professional services as the organization’s “web lackey” and “computer guy”. I volunteer my time because it’s a way to help people help people who are in need.
ELAP is an organization composed of attorneys who volunteer their time to perform pro-bono work. It’s part of being a practicing attorney in Washington state. There are also a number of folks who are not attorneys that volunteer their time by performing clerical work such as filing and data entry, clinic intake coordinators, graphic artists, communications and new media specialists, to name a few.
My term on the Board expired in April. I was surprised to find that the Board presented me with an award – Non-Attorney Volunteer of the Year 2011. Each year the award is presented to one of the program’s volunteer attorneys who have distinguished themselves through their service.
I appreciate the recognition evidenced by this award and sincerely hope it is the first of what becomes a yearly activity in the recognition of achievement by volunteer non-attorneys.
