Havelock's forces were later joined by those under Major Renaud and James Neil. Further Company forces, consisting of around 1,200 British soldiers, 150 Sikh soldiers, 30 irregular cavalry, and 6 cannons, had set out from Allahabad under the command of General Henry Havelock to retake Cawnpore and Lucknow. Amid the prevailing chaos, Nana Saheb and his forces entered the British magazine in the northern part of Kanpur. The Company forces had expected the rebels to leave for Delhi, so were unprepared for a lengthy defence. By the time Scindia marched to Jodhpur in September 1752, Bakht Singh had died and was succeeded by his son, Vijay Singh (also spelled Bijay Singh). Following Safdar Jang’s death, the Marathas once again invaded Rajput territories, prompting Madho Singh to seek assistance from Safdar Jang’s successor, Shuja-ud-Daula, and the Afghan ruler Ahmad Shah Abdali. Nawab Saheb Kunta is a neighbourhood of Hyderabad, India. The British quickly installed Wallajah as the Nawab of Arcot in 1754, and most of Chanda Sahib's native forces defected to the British. After his forces were defeated by Robert Clive and the Maratha Empire, he attempted to recoup his losses but was beheaded during a mutiny of the Tanjore army.

In 1793, the nawab was stripped of his nizamat duties and was turned into a state pensioner with a new title- 'Nawab of Murshidabad'. Chanda eventually negotiated a surrender to Maratha forces from Tanjore that had arrived to assist the British, believing this to be preferable to surrendering to the British. For the defence of his territory, the Nawab paid the British 400,000 pagodas per annum (about £160,000) and 10 out of the 21 battalions of the Madras army were posted to garrison his forts.
